Global golf meets local greens in Ottawa

Published on

With the 2024 merger of the PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica into the PGA TOUR Americas, Ottawa became a pivotal stop, bringing the excitement of international golf to local fans and reinforcing the city’s reputation for hosting premier sporting events.

The PGA TOUR Americas is a reimagined circuit and extremely competitive pathway that aims to identify, develop and grow top players to the highest level of professional golf: the PGA TOUR.

There are two competitive “swings” in the PGA TOUR Americas, a Latin America Swing and a North America swing. Throughout a 16-event schedule beginning in March, players compete for a chance to move on to the Korn Ferry Tour next season, and ultimately, make it to the PGA TOUR. Ottawa was an integral part of the event lineup, and just like in 2023, the Commissionaires Ottawa Open was hosted at Eagle Creek Golf Club in late July.

The PGA TOUR Americas concluded in September with the Fortinet Cup Championship.

Local golf courses

Beyond the excitement of the tournament, Ottawa offers a variety of golf courses for every skill level. Dozens of public courses are open from early May to late October, and many of them are just outside the downtown core.

There are plenty of courses in West Ottawa, including Marshes Golf Club at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. The 18-hole main course and nine-hole short course wind through a wildlife sanctuary. There’s also a Blackbird Falls mini- putt course, an on-site spa and Ironstone Grill to grab a bite during your day.

South Ottawa includes Manderley on the Green with three nine-hole courses and five sets of tee blocks on each hole.

If you’re downtown, one of the most convenient golf courses to access is Pine View Golf Course. It’s just a 10-minute walk from Blair Station on the O-Train's Confederation Line, and you can also rent clubs at the course.

The golf community

Ottawa has a long history of teeing off. In 2024, the city hosted the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship in August at the Carleton Golf & Yacht Club. In August 2022, Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club was the site of the historic 2022 CP Women’s Open.

The city even hosted multiple iterations of the World Junior Girls Championship, an international competition that takes place annually. The 2015 and 2017 Championships took place at the Marshes Golf Club, in 2018 it was hosted again in Ottawa at the Camelot Golf & Country Club.

The Ottawa Gatineau Golf Expo also takes place here annually, with over 70 exhibitors and golf courses from across Ontario and Quebec.

The legacy of the Commissionaires Ottawa Open

Hosting the tournament in Ottawa has also provided a unique opportunity to give back to Canada’s Armed Forces. The event (along with PGA TOUR Canada) continues to support Solider On, a program by the Canadian Armed Forces that supports the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and veterans through sports, recreation and creative activities.

Across eight countries, Ottawa was chosen as an incredible host city for amateur golfers, avid supporters and some of the world’s most elite athletes during the historic merging of the PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. With events like the Commissionaires Ottawa Open, the city’s reputation as a go-to golf destination keeps growing. Thanks to great courses, strong community support and a welcoming atmosphere, Ottawa is sure to remain a key host city for future golf circuits.
