Shine On Program

Ottawa Tourism strives to provide visitors with a complete capital experience and recognizes the importance that customer service plays within this context. As such, Ottawa Tourism has created a program to teach and celebrate our city’s dedicated front line staff to ensure our destination shines on long after our visitors have left.


Shine On Academy

The Shine On Academy is an interactive learning tool to teach front line hospitality employees about tourism in Ottawa, customer service best practices, and what to see and do in the destination. It includes four online courses that can be taken at your own pace:

  • an overview of Ottawa’s tourism industry and visitor economy;
  • a robust look at regions in Ottawa and the attractions, restaurants, and businesses that make them vibrant;
  • a refresher on best practices in customer service and a look at the three pillars of being an Ottawa Host; and
  • resources that can be referenced in the future to further assist with providing great and knowledgeable customer service.

Along the way, Ottawa Insider Tips give learners more insight into hidden gems and locals-only knowledge. Graduates of the program receive a certificate to confirm that they have passed the course which can be shared with current and future employers.

Please note that the Shine On Academy is meant for Ottawa-area members of the tourism and hospitality community. If you are unsure whether you qualify for the program, please contact Ottawa Tourism.


Shine On Awards

The Shine On Awards have been developed to recognize excellent service in all areas of front line hospitality and are awarded at an annual gala to celebrate Ottawa’s visitor economy. Nominations are compiled throughout the year and judged by a panel of industry experts to determine winners in each category, as well as a final Shine On Award winner. Winners receive prizes, and the overall winner receives a special grand prize.
