Sparks Street and Parliament Hill

Both Parliament Hill and the pedestrian-only Sparks Street are nestled in the hustle and bustle of Ottawa’s urban core.

Did you know? Nicholas Sparks owned a large stretch of what proved to be poor farmland where Sparks Street is today. As the city evolved, Sparks’ land became home to businesses, government offices as well as residences for Parliamentarians.

In 1868, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, one of the Fathers of Confederation, was assassinated outside of his home on Sparks Street. In 1961, the street was transformed into North America’s first permanent outdoor pedestrian mall.

It remains a commercial area with a blend of long established and newer businesses housed settled in heritage architecture.

Food + Drinks

Sparks Street is lined with a variety of businesses that are especially busy during weekdays and special events.

Dine at restaurants like Riviera, Nate’s Deli and Noor Bistro and enjoy drinks at spots like Stolen Goods and 3 Brasseurs. Take a walk along this pedestrian-only street and you’re guaranteed to find your new favourite place for food and drinks.

For a stunning view of the Peace Tower, head to Tavern on the Hill.

Arts + Culture

Canada’s Parliament Buildings offer free tours and programming. You’ll also find band concerts, Zumba on the Hill, and much more taking place on the front lawn.

As you walk along Sparks Street, you’ll notice art installations and buskers. With a variety of events taking place here throughout the year, the arts and culture showcased on this historic street will leave a lasting impression.

Shopping

There are plenty of local shops and big-name stores along Sparks Street. If you’re looking for fine jewellery, take a look at Howard or True Bijoux, for souvenirs, check out Canada’s Four Corners and for menswear head to Morgante Menswear Limited.

Nightlife

With bars like Rabbit Hole, 3 Brasseurs, Darcy McGee’s and more, Sparks Street is a popular spot to partake in Ottawa’s nightlife.

Major annual events + sports

Parliament Hill is home to many major events throughout the year, including the country’s largest Canada Day celebration!

Thousands of people gather on Sparks Street for popular festivals throughout the year. The Sparks Street Poutinefest celebrates the decadent Canadian dish made of fries topped with gravy and cheese curds.

The Ottawa Ribfest welcomes BBQ rib vendors from all over North America cooking their specialties.

And the International Busker Festival features street performers from around the world who show off their talents. Admission to these events is free!
