Media release: Ottawa’s brand holds key to economic recovery

City of Ottawa and Ottawa Tourism host event to rally support

OTTAWA, March 30, 2022—The City of Ottawa and Ottawa Tourism brought more than 125 local tourism and business leaders, owners, and operators together at yesterday’s Canada in One City event at the Westin Ottawa to share how city branding can lead the way to economic recovery. Guest speaker Frank Cuypers of Antwerp (biography below) talked about reputation in times of uncertainty, while a panel of city leaders discussed the importance of place branding and reputation to economic growth and prosperity and Ottawa Tourism shared examples of local branding work as well as updated resources that help tell a coherent and compelling Ottawa story.

Ottawa’s brand can be encapsulated by the phrase Canada In One City, with themes that reflect our identity: Connect with Canada, Joie de vivre, Canada’s village, and Ottawa’s legacy.

“Now more than ever, a strong and consistent city brand is necessary to break through the clutter—whether you’re in tourism, economic development, or even talent recruitment,” says Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “A city with a good reputation attracts both visitors and talented workers, and contributes to improving business opportunities.”

“We continue our work to build Ottawa’s reputation and drive economic growth,” says Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. “All Ottawans have a role to play in sharing our city's story with the world, and I encourage everyone to get involved.”

Individuals can be part of the movement by sharing social media content that reflects the brand and using the #MyOttawa hashtag (#MonOttawa in French).
